Applications are invited from enthusiastic individuals for an EU funded full time PhD studentship with skills, knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the specialist research areas listed below:
- Machine Tools and Machines Simulation and Modelling;
- Applied Control Engineering;
- Applied Mathematics and Stochastic Modelling;
- Mechanical Engineering;
- Robotics, Automation, Mechatronics and Manufacturing Engineering;
- Computer Science with Machine Learning and Data Analytics;
The successful applicant will join the Systems Engineering Research Group in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and work closely with colleagues whose research is linked to the Institute of Materials and Manufacturing and Institute of Energy Futures. This EU funded project is concentrated on design and development of real-time predictive fault detection and maintenance planning of machines, equipment and tools in a typical production line. The purpose is to bring sudden (unplanned) breakdowns of machines and production lines (network of machines) to Zero.
Applicants will be required to demonstrate their ability to think innovatively and produce solutions that will be applied and tested in multiple manufacturing sites throughout the EU. The project will require you to take a concept and conduct a full cycle of research and development under supervision from academic staff and Research Fellows. Eligibility
Applicants will have or expect to receive a first degree at 2:1 or above in areas such as Machine Tools, Control Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Machine Learning-Data Analytics, Computing, Mechatronics, Electronics or Automation and Manufacturing Systems. A masters degree is an advantage but not essential. Previous industrial experience and/or national or international scientific awards will also be an advantage.
The studentship is for a period of 3 years (36 months) and the successful applicant from the UK/EU will receive an annual stipend of £16,553 plus payment of their full time Home/EU tuition fees. Overseas candidates are welcome to apply but they will receive a monthly cost of living allowance (£500) plus payment of their full time international tuition fee.
